Don’t Throw Away Your Shot

When you hear “Weehawken, New Jersey”, you probably don’t think much of it. It’s just a spot in New Jersey, right? Well, actually, it is the dueling site of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Over a hundred years ago, in 1804, these two important men stood face to face with guns drawn, ready to defend their honor. This moment is regarded by many to be one of the most dramatic moments in American history.

  • A view of the base of the Hamilton statue at the Weehawkin Dueling Grounds Anna, a teen girl wearing jeans and a t-shirt with the slogan "Young and Scrappy" is sitting in her wheelchair directly in front of the memorial. You can see a bit of the boulder behind the statue and there is a black wrought iron fence surrounding the site. Anna is smiling at the camera.

  • This bronze bust of Alexander Hamilton marks the spot where he and Burr had their famous deadly duel. You can see the river and the New York City skyline in the distance.

There is the sidewalk in front with the wrought iron fence surrounding the memorial and a black metal trash can and lamp post in the lower right corner. The river and skyline of NYC are visible in the background.
  • Today, you can see the dueling site up close! It’s small and there is no museum, simply a plaque detailing the “fatal errand”. The coolest part, however, is that you can see the same rock that the wounded Hamilton leaned up against minutes after he was shot.

  • Anna, a teen girl and huge fan of the Hamilton musical, is reading an informational sign posted at the Weehawkin Dueling Grounds. Her back is to the camera and you see her long hair, her burgundy heather Hamilton t-shirt and she is sitting in her wheelchair. The river and skyline of NYC are in the background.

One arm is by the side of the chair and she has long hair and is wearing a t-shirt. The sign is surrounded by an iron fence and the river and city of NYC are in the background.

  • The tiny area is accessible enough, as the monument can be found along a residential street. It’s relatively smooth, with a bit of an incline as you move past the monument and signs. There’s also a ramp right in front of the monument, so if you have to roll a bit up the street, you can easily get up onto the sidewalk. Parking is the tricky part, as there aren’t lots nearby and you’ll have to rely on finding a street spot. Nevertheless, this tiny monument is an important one, as it stands as a symbol of one of the craziest moments in both of these men’s lives. I highly recommend you check it out, especially after seeing the Hamilton musical.
