When you hear “Weehawken, New Jersey”, you probably don’t think much of it. It’s just a spot in New Jersey, right? Well, actually, it is the dueling site of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Over a hundred years ago, in 1804, these two important men stood face to face with guns drawn, ready to defend their honor. This moment is regarded by many to be one of the most dramatic moments in American history.
Today, you can see the dueling site up close! It’s small and there is no museum, simply a plaque detailing the “fatal errand”. The coolest part, however, is that you can see the same rock that the wounded Hamilton leaned up against minutes after he was shot.
The tiny area is accessible enough, as the monument can be found along a residential street. It’s relatively smooth, with a bit of an incline as you move past the monument and signs. There’s also a ramp right in front of the monument, so if you have to roll a bit up the street, you can easily get up onto the sidewalk. Parking is the tricky part, as there aren’t lots nearby and you’ll have to rely on finding a street spot. Nevertheless, this tiny monument is an important one, as it stands as a symbol of one of the craziest moments in both of these men’s lives. I highly recommend you check it out, especially after seeing the Hamilton musical.
