This adventure was a “whale of a tale”… the Blue Whale of Catoosa to be exact. It’s been an Oklahoma highlight of Route 66 since 1972.
Fun Fact: The whale was built by Hugh Davis as a surprise anniversary gift for his wife Zelta, who collected whales. He imagined it as a place where their kids and grandkids could play and swim. Unfortunately, it fell into disrepair until the people of Catoosa came together to restore this beloved local landmark. While you can’t swim in the pond anymore, it’s still a fun roadside stop just outside of Tulsa. Man, I love Route 66.
While the parking lot was a little tricky with gravel, once I got to the sidewalk I had no problem rolling down to the whale.
