Are you ready to rock? Part guitar museum, part intimate music venue, and part charitable foundation providing music therapy, education, and free guitars for southern youth. Whoa! Songbirds Guitar & Pop Culture Museum is a place with a lot going on. We kept seeing their light-up neon winged guitar high on the Chattanooga Choo Choo Depot, reminding us that we needed to find time to visit. There are lots of displays with guitars and memorabilia, all arranged by artist. Plus, an impressive amount of local Chattanooga music history as well.
My favorite section was the interactive area to the right from the welcome desk. There, I found displays that explained frequencies, amplifiers, special effects, and the parts of a guitar with both visual and hands-on displays. I could have spent a really long time playing with all the ways to manipulate sound.
Songbirds is wonderfully wheelchair accessible. There is a ramp at the right of the grand entrance doors to the Chattanooga Choo Choo and from there it is easy rolling through the foyer and into the courtyard. There, you’ll find the doors to Songbirds along the right, about halfway back. Inside the doors, you will spot an elevator that will take you to the 2nd floor and directly into the museum. So easy! Accessible restrooms are on the first floor to the side of the elevator. This was a really fun, musical way to spend an afternoon.
