Carnaval is Coming!

Carnaval is Coming!

As Cozumel comes alive with Carnaval spirit, you will see decorations everywhere and performances in the parks. There will be more food and novelty vendors in the parks and bordering the streets. There will be vendors offering children’s activities at the Quintana Roo park and you can’t help but notice the massive tents being constructed as well. There are tents for the performances, giant stages, Carnaval Palace, and tents to act as the backstage areas for performers.

Seating for dance competitions in front of the municipal palace of Cozumel Mexico. There is scaffolding rigged with lighting and a queen candidate's fans have assembled with large placards spelling out her name to encourage votes for this queen candidate. The chairs are standard folding chairs in a row and the building is white, against a dusky cloudy sky.

Anna, a teen wheelchair user with long brown hair and wearing glasses, is smiling at the camera as she waits for a performance to begin. She has a bottle of water set on the table next to her alongside her cellphone. She is wearing a white ruffled t-shirt and has an arm in a blue medical sling, as she waits for a Carnaval dance performance in Cozumel Mexico.

Very large display pieces for Carnaval season set at the entry to Benito Juarez park in Cozumel. These are more than twice the height of tourists standing near them. They are sculptures of costumed Carnaval performers, with a woman on one side and a man on the other.
The entrance to the main ferry dock on Cozumel is decorated for Carnaval. Bright colors wrap the pillars like candy sticks and there are brightly colored Carnaval masks mounted on the pillars as well. To the right of the terminal,, you can see two bright yellow ferries docked.
View of brightly dressed crowd of both performers and spectators in front of a streetside viewing station with both seating and shade. The ocean is visible beyond the performance area.
A seated and standing room crowd lines the stage area waiting for Carnaval dance competitions at Parque Quintana Roo in Cozumel Mexico. You can see children's amusement rides and vendor huts in the background.
Youth in streetside churro stand using his fist to pack down the dough inside the canister of the machine used to form the churros. Bottles of toppings line the table in front of him.

Posters are printed and distributed. They become popular collectibles, especially within the ex-pat community. There are also signs lining the streets encouraging votes for the various King and Queen candidates. Finally, bleachers for the crowds will be constructed along the parade route.  The scene for carnaval is coming together!
