Choo Choo! Today we spent some time exploring the Georgia State Railroad Museum. This is probably a great museum for lots of families, but it wasn’t a great fit for us. While they have tons of unique information and cool displays, it would be a challenge for anyone with a wheelchair or another mobility disability. There were some large gravel areas to navigate, and to enjoy the impressive display of trains, you have to first get over railroad tracks and then climb up into the train cars. You can’t win them all and I’ll be back out exploring another museum tomorrow! It would be really great if someday they could build a ramp and small deck up to some of the train cars.
What I did love about this museum was the displays beyond the train cars themselves. The museum is located at the old “Central of Georgia Railway Savannah Shops and Terminal Facilities”, which included the repair shop where all steam locomotive maintenance and repairs took place. They also built and remodeled other railroad cars here, too. It was an impressive operation. That plus the functional train turntable in the middle of the whole thing, meant we still got to learn some new facts and explore some Georgia history.
