Mexican Gelato?

Mexican Gelato?

The Shop

Pola is a very popular small gelato shop near Santa Lucia park.  It is famous for high-quality handmade gelato, but also just as famous for offbeat flavors with a Meridian connection. But is this cute gelato shop in Merida accessible?

What about the accessibility at Pola gelato in Merida?

Honestly, it is not very wheelchair accessible.  There is a high step to get inside and because it is small, it can be hard to move once you are inside.  This is best experienced with a partner who goes inside and relays the available flavors to you, then orders your selection for you.  The park is not that far away and is a much better place to enjoy your treat.  The inside of this shop is rather plain with not much to see otherwise.  I was able to see a chalkboard listing their current flavors from the doorway. I think this was a cash-only business, so bring your pesos.

The Flavors

My family tried Beso de Luna, which is chocolate with almonds, orange peel, and coffee. I liked the Stracciatella which is vanilla with chocolate. More unique flavors include Queso de Bola, or ball of Edam cheese, popular in regional recipes; and Tascalate which included roast corn and chocolate mimicking a regional drink.  How fun is that?
