Looking down on Chattanooga

Looking down on Chattanooga

I will always remember my first visit to Point Park Battlefield. It’s part of the larger Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, and is where the “battle above the clouds” took place. It’s one thing to hear a story from battle, about soldiers fighting their way up a mountain because of what they believed in… and it’s another thing entirely to see with your own eyes the steep incline and near drop off they battled their way up. This was a great way to make this part of history more tangible for me.

Since it’s part of the National Parks Service, I was able to use my Access Pass for our family to enter. If you’re a wheelchair user, you can enjoy the paved trail that loops a short distance around the top of the mountain. There are some small hills, but nothing I couldn’t manage without a little boost, or with the use of my SmartDrive. For others, they offer miles upon miles of hiking trails, too.

  • The view is spectacular, so I highly recommend a visit if you’re in Chattanooga. There are paid parking spots right by the iconic archway entrance to the park, as well as the road leading up to the park. Note, even if it doesn’t look like it’s a paid parking spot, it is! In the same area is the visitor center, with a small interactive display and Battles Chattanooga, but more on that later.
